A Beginner's Guide to Fragrance Families

Fragrance families are a shortcut, not a cage. They describe the dominant character of a scent — the impression it leaves more than a literal list of ingredients.

Floral scents centre on flowers, from a single dewy rose to a full bouquet. Fresh scents lean on citrus, green notes, aquatic accords and clean musks. Woody scents use cedar, sandalwood, vetiver and oud. Amber scents are warm, resinous and often sweet, built on vanilla, benzoin and labdanum.

Most modern perfumes are hybrids. Delina is a floral with fruity and woody edges; Layton is an amber-spicy fragrance with a lavender heart. The family is where you begin, not where you end.

When you shop, use families to narrow the field and your nose to make the final call. And always test on skin, not paper.

“The best perfume is the one you stop noticing — because it has become part of you.”
